Oshawa names new downtown urban park “Veterans Square”

The City of Oshawa is paying tribute to its deep connection to Canada’s military history by naming a new urban park “Veterans Square.”

Council decided on the name by a vote of 7-4 Monday after a report suggested two other names, including “Celebration Square” and “Heritage Square.”

The park is located at the corner of Bond and Simcoe streets in downtown Oshawa and is adjacent to Colonel R. S. McLaughlin Armoury.

Councillor Brian Nicholson said in a Facebook post council has also asked staff to investigate naming the gardens in the square after the four military services and after allied militaries who fought alongside Canada troops.

“We are also going to look at a garden to recognize those who remained in Canada building our economy and keeping the home fires burning,” Nicholson added. “They too should be honoured as veterans.”

The city previously said the community hub will be the perfect spot for celebrations, events, concerts, gatherings and more.

It’s slated to be completed this fall.
