Around $9.6-million from provincial gas tax earmarked for transit in Durham Region

Durham Region Transit (DRT) is receiving around $9.6-million in 2024 from the province’s Gas Tax program.

In 2023, Durham got around $9.3-million.

“This $284,553 funding boost to Durham Region ensures that municipalities can improve service hours, acquire new vehicles, expand routes, and enhance accessibility,” said Ajax MPP Patrice Barnes in a release. “This initiative fosters a more connected and inclusive transportation network for all residents of this thriving region.”

Queen’s Park takes a portion of the tax on gasoline sold in Ontario. For every litre of gas, two cents go into the provincial Gas Tax program, and those funds are shared with municipalities.
