Queen’s Park encouraging pre-apprenticeship programs for young Ontarians

Officials are looking to encourage young Ontarians to consider careers in the skilled trades.

According to Queen’s Park, there is a shortage of skilled workers. That shortage is expected to grow in the coming years as more and more people retire.

A number of pre-apprenticeship training programs are free to join.

On Wednesday, the province announced an extra $5-million in annual funding.

“To build a stronger Ontario and grow our economy we need all hands on deck,” said Labour Minister Monte McNaughton in a released statement. “Every day, there are hundreds of thousands of paychecks waiting to be collected.”

In the near future, officials say they will be finalizing another round of projects as part of the Skills Development Fund. The fund aims to connect workers to training and jobs.

I think this idea is great. It shouldn’t have to be that way though, the government should have kept the trade schools open like General Vanier in Oshawa and Harwood in Ajax. These schools ran amazing programs. Many of the students went onto successful careers. There wouldn’t be the scramble there is today for the trades

Unfortunately the applications are now closed. Too bad for the people who missed this opportunity. This is the 1st time I have read anything about this.

Thanks!
