Oshawa MPP calling on PC government to put seniors ahead of for-profit LTC companies

Oshawa’s MPP wants to know why Treasury Board President and Pickering-Uxbridge MPP Peter Bethlenfalvy reportedly denied funding requests for long-term care homes, even as outbreaks were developing.

Jennifer French is calling on the Ford government to start serving seniors, instead of the companies that run the homes they live in.

French raised troubling inspection reports Wednesday and pointed to media reports that accuse Bethlenfalvy of denying funding to long-term care homes.

“Folks in Pickering now know that the awful history of complaints and non-compliance at Orchard Villa, where 78 people have died, were well known to this government for years,” French said.

She says the Ford government has failed to pull Orchard Villa’s licence and refused NDP member’s calls for a public, judicial inquiry into long-term care.

French adds that Ford’s government has actually passed legislation that she says would make it harder for families to get justice from long-term care homes.

“Over 1,800 of Ontario’s COVID-19-caused deaths have been in long-term care, and the Ford government is doubling down on playing politics,” said French. “I’m not playing. I stand with the families and seniors and ask when this self-serving government will starting serving seniors and their loved ones.”
