15 year old facing arson charges in connection with playground fire in Uxbridge

A 15 year old is facing charges in connection with a fire at an Uxbridge playground. Durham police say last Friday, fire crews were called to Testa Park after the playground equipment was set ablaze. The fire was quickly extinguished but the playground was extensively damaged. A 15 year old from Uxbridge has been charged with arson while police issued a caution to a 14 year old who is said to be involved.

Female pedestrian hit and killed by train in Toronto

The investigation is continuing for Toronto police after a female pedestrian was hit and killed by a train. Officials say the victim was struck in the Yonge and Summerhill area around 11:00 p.m. Tuesday night. The cause of the incident is still being determined and witnesses are being sought. There is still no word on the name or age of the victim.

Durham police charge 19 year-old Oshawa man in robbery investigation

A 19-year-old Oshawa man is facing several charges including robbery and carrying a concealed weapon. Durham police is applauding the work of its K9 Unit following the arrest of the suspect. The team was called to Wentworth Street at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday after the man displayed a knife and robbed a couple before fleeing. They were able to track the suspects scent to a house on Oxford Street where Kyle Watson was arrested. The victims were not harmed during the incident.

65 year-old Peterborough man charged in child porn investigation

A 65 year-old Peterborough man has been charged with child porn offences. Police in Peterborough and Toronto teamed up for the investigation and allege James Alex Brunton made covert videos inside locker rooms. Brunton faces over 60 charges including possessing, accessing and distributing child pornography, sexual exploitation, extortion and forcible confinement. According to police, the accused was in trusted positions with numerous minor hockey and lacrosse organizations including the Lakefield Chiefs, Junior C Lakers and the AAA minor Peterborough Petes.

Oshawa man dies in single vehicle accident

A 54 year old Oshawa man is dead after Durham Police say he had a medical episode behind the wheel of his pickup truck.  Around 2:30 p.m. yesterday, witnesses called Police after the truck was seen leaving the roadway on Simcoe Street South, hitting a retaining wall and a hydro pole.  The driver was apparently slumped over the wheel.  An autopsy is scheduled for today.

Hamilton police confirm the remains of 32 year-old Tim Bosma have been found

The worst fears have been confirmed in the search for a Hamilton-area man who had been missing for eight days. Hamilton police Chief Glenn De Caire announced Tuesday morning that the burned remains of 32 year-old Tim Bosma have been found. Bosma disappeared last Monday after going on a test drive with two men in his black Dodge Ram pickup truck, which he had posted for sale online. Investigators have arrested one man so far in the case, 27 year-old Dellen Millard of Toronto. Millard will appear in court on Wednesday and according to his lawyer, will plead not guilty to forcible confinement and theft over $5,000. Police are still seeking a second man, who has not been identified.

One person dead, another in hospital following single-vehicle crash in Caledon

The investigation into a fatal collision in Caledon is underway. Police say a vehicle struck a hydro pole around 11:30 p.m. Monday in the Torbram and Mayfield area. The cause of the collision is still being determined. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene while another remains in hospital in critical condition. No names have been released and officials haven’t said whether or not weather played a factor in the crash.

The man who beheaded a fellow passenger on a Greyhound bus could be getting more escorted passes to go into the community

The man who beheaded a passenger on a Greyhound bus in Manitoba could be getting more privileges. Vince Li’s psychiatrist told a review panel that he no longer, and has become a model patient at a mental health centre in Selkirk, Manitoba. The psychiatrist also told the panel that Li is ready for more escorted visits into the community.

Union representing LCBO employees has started opening strike headquarters as Friday deadline looms

Anyone in need of a trip to the LCBO ahead of the long weekend might want to start thinking about doing it soon. Management is urging people to stock up before the weekend hits as a precaution. OPSEU has begun opening strike headquarters as a Friday deadline creeps near. A walkout would be the first in the 87-year history of the LCBO. The union says a major issue in the dispute is the pay disparity between full- and part-time employees.

The City of Oshawa is encouraging residents to grow their own food

Local food is more important than most people think. Environmental coordinator for the city of Oshawa Suzanne Elston says part of the city’s strategic plan is building resilient local food systems. She says if there was a major catastrophe, fresh food would only be available at local grocery stores for three days and with that in mind they’re encouraging residents to grow their own food. The city is holding free “Tuesday’s at the table” sessions again this year to give residents tips on how to grow their own food. Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield and two crew members return to earth

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield and two other crew members are doing well after returning to earth according to NASA. The trio touched down in Kazakhstan aboard a Russian capsule late on Monday night. Hadfield completed his five-month stay aboard the International Space Station where he served as the first ever Canadian commander. On Tuesday, Hadfield will be flown to Houston, Texas. Prime Minister Stephen Harper thanked Hadfield for doing a remarkable job, adding his use of social media brought the miracle of space travel home to Canadians and to the entire world.

Durham Police release sketch of man wanted for exposing himself in a Pickering park

Durham police are looking for the public’s help to identify a man wanted for exposing himself in a Pickering park. On May 1st, three women and a young child reported seeing the man touching himself inappropriately at the Petticoat Conservation area. One of the women yelled at him and he took off on his bicycle. He is described as white; approximately 55-65 years old; 180- 200 lbs; 5′ 9- 5′ 11 tall with short grey hair and possible facial hair. He was last seen wearing a long sleeve dark coloured T-shirt, very short dark coloured athletic shorts, light coloured running shoes; black sunglasses.  It’s reported he wrapped a yellow rag around his head before putting on his black bicycle helmet and riding away on his bike in a southeast direction towards the waterfront trail.  No further description is available for the bicycle.
