Three men from the U.K. charged in GTA paving scam

Three men from the United Kingdom are facing charges in connection with a paving scam operating in the GTA. Durham police say a Toronto business man reported that the suspects offered to pave his commercial driveway but then came back asking for more money. When the man refused to pay the suspects threaten him and said they would damage his property. OPP were also involved in the investigation and say several churches, and community centres were also targeted. Police are reminding the public to be vigilant with all door-to-door salesmen and say you should always ask for a written quote. Charged are: 24 year-old William Adams, 23 year-old James Nunn and 44 year-old Andrew Hill.
Durham Police stop numerous impaired drivers over the long weekend

It was a busy weekend for Durham Police officers as they conducted their first long weekend ride program of the season. According to authorities, 1,745 drivers were stopped, 32 were given a roadside breath test, 3 people received 3 day suspensions for registering a ‘WARN’ and 5 drivers were charged with drinking and driving. 26 people were also charged with various highway traffic act offences.
74 year old Oshawa man facing more sexual assault charges

An Oshawa man is facing additional sexual assault charges. Durham police say further investigation led to more charges against 74 year old James Lionel Meagher. Police are still asking any other victims to come forward. Meagher was originally charged with two counts of sexual assault back in February.
NDP leader Andrea Horwath says her party will ensure the passage of the provincial budget

After much consideration, NDP leader Andrea Horwath says she will ensure the passage of the provincial budget. The announcement means Ontarians will be spared an election. Horwath says her party did its best to make sure the people of the province have a more accountable government. Last week, Premier Kathleen Wynne agreed to Horwath’s extra demand for a financial accountability office, modelled on the parliamentary budget office in Ottawa. Horwath says the government has also agreed to bring plans for new tolls on car-pool lanes back to the legislature for a vote.
Oklahoma death toll after torando lowered to 24

24 people are confirmed dead after a massive tornado tore through the Oklahoma suburb of Moore. The medical examiner’s office revised the previously reported number of 51. The tornado was said to be 800-metres wide packing winds of 300-kilometres an hour. Twenty children are among the dead after the twister destroyed an elementary school. President Barack Obama has declared it a major disaster. Meanwhile, more severe weather is in the forecast for parts of the United States already hurting from powerful tornadoes, Moor is not in the at risk area.
Motorcycle rider suffers serious injuries after collision in Ajax

A Pickering motorcycle rider suffered serious injuries after a collision in Ajax. The accident happened on Salem Road and Highway 7 on Sunday afternoon. Durham police say the driver of a Saturn pulled out in front of the motorcycle and the two ended up colliding. The 50 year old motorcyclist is being treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries. 49 year old Noel Sparling of Ajax was charged for careless driving.
Harper says he will be tightening the rules in the upper chamber

Prime Minister Harper told his caucus morning that if any of them wants to use public office for their own benefit they should make other plans or better yet leave the room. Harper Said Tuesday morning that he will tighten the rules in the upper chamber after the recent Senate expense scandals. He told the caucus he was very upset about the conduct of some people and the conduct of his own office.
Independent panel makes 68 recommendations about Lakeridge Health Oshawa’s emergency department

Lakeridge Health Oshawa says they’re working to improve their emergency environment. The Ontario Nurse Association hired an independent panel who made 68 recommendations to address unsafe staffing levels at the hospital. Lakeridge Chief Nursing Executive Lisa Shiozaki says they’re confident in the progress being made. Recommendations include using an all registered nurse model in the treatment area.
Durham Police looking for items stolen from a house in Ajax

Durham police are asking for the public’s help in finding some stolen property. The items were taken from a house on Kearney Drive in Ajax on May 2nd after a break and enter. Police arrested several teens in connection with the incident a few days later, but they’re still trying to recover a large number of electronics that were taken from the home such as mac computers, gaming systems, Iphones, Ipad minis and jewellery. Some light could be shed on Tuesday about reports of a video allegedly showing Toronto Mayor Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine. The mayor’s brother, Councillor Doug Ford, told a Vancouver radio station over the weekend that he would respond to the reports. The alleged footage made headlines last week after it was reported by the Toronto Star and the U.S.-based website Gawker.com. Ford calls the entire ordeal ridiculous and a smear job, while his lawyer called the reports false and defamatory.
The issue of a new casino in Toronto being debated at special council meeting

The debate over whether or not Toronto council supports a casino in the city will get going once again. Councillors will weigh in on the issue Tuesday at a special meeting and are expected to hold a vote. Last week, Mayor Rob Ford threatened to kill plans for a new casino, unless the province agreed to give the city $100 million a year in hosting fees. The government says a new formula would give Toronto nearly $54 million a year, far below expectations.
Four men facing charges after Whitby drug bust

Durham police made multiple arrests after a drug bust in Whitby. Police say last Wednesday, they seized over $5,000 worth of drugs from a house on Palmerston Avenue. 27 grams of cocaine, 105 grams of marijuana, 2.4 grams of ketamine and 17 ecstasy tablets were found at the house. 30 year old Guiseppe Bossio, 25 year old Eric Stenz, and 28 year old David Gallagager of Whitby along with 71 year old Gordon Kimmerly of Clarington are facing numerous charges including possession for the purpose of trafficking.
