Technology is the theme of this year’s police week

It’s a new age, and nowadays, police are using all the tools they can when they need to connect to the public. One of their biggest advances is in social media. Sergeant Stan Piersma says they’re kicking off police week, and this year’s theme focuses on technology and communities. Displays will be set up at the Oshawa Centre, including counterfeit money detection equipment and showcases from the tactical unit, along with representative from the neighbourhood watch program.
Need for acceptance highlighted by students at Pine Ridge

Music can be a very powerful tool, and members of the Durham Police Heat band are using it to promote diversity and put a stop to bullying. The band took the stage at Pine Ridge Secondary School in Pickering recently, launching a new C.D., entitled ‘I Am Who I Am’. Constable Scott Dargie says the music spreads the message of acceptance. Students at Pine Ridge have been champions in the battle against bullying, creating the ‘I Am Who I Am’ movement in the wake of the death of Mitchell Wilson. The 11 year-old Pickering boy took his own life in 2011, in large part due to being a victim of bullying.
Pickering promotes Responsible Pet Ownership month

It’s time to celebrate dog’s best friend this May with Responsible Pet Ownership month. The City of Pickering is taking 31-days to promote animal health, by reminding residents to keep their cats indoors, have pets spayed or neutered, and get their animals vaccinated for rabies. Acting Supervisor of Animal Services for the city, Jennifer Hayden, says it’s the law. Hayden also says there are a number of dogs at the city’s shelter that need homes right now. Police release suspect descriptions following shooting at Yorkdale mall

Toronto Police have released the description of suspects wanted after a shooting at Yorkdale mall on Saturday. Just after midnight, officers got a call that shots had been fired near Joey restaurant. Bullets flew through the window of restaurant, and one man was struck. He was taken to hospital with non−life−threatening injuries, and remains in stable condition. The suspects were last seen eastbound on Yorkdale Service Road towards Allen Road, in a current−model silver Honda CRV. Police are looking for two men. The first one is 5’10″to 6′, medium build, wearing a jacket with the top half black and the bottom halfred and black pants. The second man is 5’10″ to 6′, medium build, wearing grey hoodie and light−coloured pants. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416−808−3200 or Crime Stoppers 416−222−TIPS (8477).
Pedestrian struck, killed by Toronto streetcar

Officers in Toronto are trying to figure out what happened during a Sunday morning crash that killed one man. Around 2 a.m., a pedestrian was struck and killed by a streetcar in the city’s east end. Police questioned passengers and had closed down the Queen Street and Kingston Road area for the investigation; however, it has since been reopened.
17th annual Sporting Life 10k underway in Toronto; road closures in effect

The streets of Toronto are packed with runners, all hoping to raise money to send children with cancer to summer camp. The 17th Annual Sporting Life 10k kicks off Sunday around 8 a.m. Organizers have set a goal of $2.4 million, and the odds are looking good because more than 27,000 people are taking part in the event. Police arrest 27-year-old man in connection with dissappearance of Ancaster man

The hunt for a missing Ancaster man is in critical hours, says Hamilton Superintendent Dan Kinsella. Police in Mississauga have arrested Dellen Millard, while he was driving on Cawthra road Saturday. Officers have charged him with forcible confinement and theft. They also believe he was the one behind the wheel of the pickup truck during the test drive that 32-year-old Tim Bosma never returned from. More information is surfacing about the 27-year-old Toronto man. Millard is reportedly the heir to Millard Air, a charter airline out of Toronto, and once held the world record for the youngest solo helicopter flight. The second suspect is still at large. Police are encouraging anyone with information to call the tip line at 905-546-2100.
Police looking for silver Honda CRV, following shooting at Yorkdale

Gunfire at Yorkdale mall has sent one man to hospital. Bullets flew through a window of Joey Restaurant around 12 a.m. on Saturday. The man who was shot suffered non-life threatening injuries and remains in stable condition. There is no word on suspects, but Toronto Police are looking for a silver, newer model Honda CRV seen fleeing the scene shortly after the shooting. This is the second time in less than two months a shooting has happened at the busy shopping centre … last time it left 23-year-old Michael Nguyen dead.
Harper meets with parents of cyberbullying victims

Relatives of four teenage girls who died after being cyberbullied or lured online met with Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Winnipeg Friday. Harper vowed to nail down on Internet tormentors. Carol Todd was among a group of parents who met Harper in a meeting and said she’s “very pleased” that Harper had taken the time to meet with the parents. Glen Canning father of a 17-year-old Halifax girl who committed suicide early last month said “harassment and intimidation should be no easier to do online than it is in the real world”. The relatives walked away optimistic that laws will be changed to crack down on these tormentors.
Air Canada planning to make operating cuts

Air Canada’s C-E-O’s has sent out a memo to senior managers informing them of new cost saving measures, including a hiring freeze and an end to consultants. The airline is reportedly planning to cut operating costs by $50-million. The cut represents less than two-and-a-half per cent of the airline’s non-fuel costs for the quarter. Air Canada wants to continue their generally strong performance in 2012 and to turn a profit in 2013. West Jet is also trying to cut costs with the increase of competition in the industry.
Suspect’s cellphone records obtained by detectives in missing Ancaster man case

Detectives say they’ve obtained the cellphone records of one of the suspects in the missing Ancaster man case. Hamilton Police held a conference on Monday, urging businesses in the Brantford area to check their security footage from Monday night, looking for Tim Bosma’s Black 2007 Dodge Ram pickup truck. The 32-year-old’s car was seen driving through downtown Brantford around 10:10 on Monday night, less than an hour after he left his home with two potential buyers. Investigators also made note, one of the men they’re looking for has the word “Ambition” tattooed to his wrist.
Durham Tourism says go local for Mother’s Day

Tourism Manager Kerri King says finding an interesting gift is a good start, and many local shops offer some unique ideas. She also says a number of local restaurants and organizations are hosting special Mother’s Day events, including an exciting zip-lining adventure at Treetop Eco-Adventure Park.
