Bus service in Toronto will be as usual on Wednesday. Stock Transportation and the union representing around 600 bus drivers reached a tentative agreement around 11:00 p.m. Tuesday, avoiding a possible strike. President of CAW Local 4268 Debra Montgomery, thanks parents for their understanding during the uncertainty. Wages were believed to be one of the key issues in the negotiations but no specific details of the deal have been released. A strike would have impacted thousands of students in the Toronto public and Catholic boards.
Toronto Police seek public assistance in armed robbery case

Toronto Police are asking for the public’s help in a robbery investigation that involved an employee of an armoured car company being beaten and pistol-whipped by two men. Staff Insp. Mike Earl says the INKAS Security Services Company in the city’s northwest end was robbed by two men in the early-morning hours of April 14. He says the men entered the premises armed with a silver-coloured handgun, and made demands for cash. A 36-year-old male employee at the facility was bound and struck with the handgun, leaving him with facial injuries that required hospital treatment. The suspects then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash in a dark or charcoal grey two-door coupe driven by a third suspect.

A strike for drivers at Stock Transportation could have an impact on thousands of families in Toronto. More than 4,000 students attending Toronto public and Catholic schools are keeping a close eye on negotiations between bus drivers and the company. Parents have received notices telling them to refer to the school board websites and twitter for the latest updates. The drivers could go on strike as early as 12:01 a.m. Wednesday.

A new four-year collective agreement has been ratified by more than 400 workers at the Toronto Zoo. According to CUPE Local 1600, the deal has modest improvements to wages in each year, and most of the concessions demanded by zoo management were withdrawn. A strike or lockout at the zoo would have jeopardized the May 18th unveiling of an exhibit starring two giant pandas on loan from China. Employees covered by the new contract include: zookeepers, horticulturalists, tradespeople and ride operators.
One person dead, another in custody following stabbing in Scarborough

One person is dead and another is in custody following a stabbing in Scarborough. Officers were called to the Kingston and Birchmount area just after 3:00 a.m. Tuesday, where they found a man dead. The victim is believed to have been around the age of 60. The name of the suspect hasn’t been released. Police haven’t given out any other information at this point.
Eight more charges laid against 24 year-old Toronto man in child-luring investigation

Toronto police have laid eight more charges in a child luring investigation against a former Recruiting Coordinator and coach with the York University Football team. Investigators allege that between January 2011 and this past February, 24 year-old Daniel Younis engaged with three boys, between 16 and 17, through cell phone and internet chats. Two of the victims were sexually assaulted, and it’s believed the crimes took place on the York campus. Police believe there may be more victims and ask anyone with information to contact authorities. Younis was taken into custody back in February on similar allegations.
Kachkar will be detained at Whitby mental hospital

A man found not criminally responsible for killing a Toronto police officer with a snow plow will be detained at a mental hospital, though he will be allowed out into the community under supervision. The Ontario Review Board has accepted a joint submission from both the crown and the lawyer for 46 year old Richard Kachkar that he should be sent to the Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Hhealth sciences in Whitby. Kachkar was found not criminally responsible last month after a trial in the death of 35 year old Police Sgt. Ryan Russell.

Police in Toronto are on the lookout for a suspicious man after a woman was followed into her apartment building. Officials say the suspect tried to get into an elevator with the female jogger on Saturday night but stopped when the door finally shut. He is described as in his early 20s with medium to dark complexion. He was wearing a ball cap with the word “Obey” on the front, beige pants and a black long-sleeved shirt. Anyone with information is being asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
Toronto’s top doctor wants calorie and sodium counts added to menus at chain restaurants

The idea of having calorie and sodium counts added to menus at chain restaurants will be debated at a Toronto Board of Health meeting. Officials will sit down Monday to discuss a proposal brought forward by the city’s Medical Officer of Health. Doctor David McKeowen says the province should approve the change in order to fight obesity and high blood pressure rates. Mayor Rob Ford does not support the move, insisting people can decide on their own whether they want to eat health or not.
‘Cycle Safe Campaign’ launched by Toronto police

As the weather continues to improve, more and more cyclists will be out on the roads. Toronto police are getting the word out about how cyclists and motorists can work together to make sure everyone stays safe. The one-week, ‘Cycle Safe Campaign’ has been launched to promote awareness and education. All officers are going to be paying close attention to a number of offences that endanger the lives of cyclists, including motorists who don’t turn safely, open vehicle doors improperly and drive in designated bike lanes. In addition, police will also watch for cyclists breaking the rules of the road as well.
Toronto police investigate stabbing in the Queen and Lansdowne area

A woman was rushed to hospital with serious injuries following a stabbing in Toronto. Police say around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, the victim was wounded in an altercation in the Queen and Lansdowne area. She is continuing to recover in hospital. Officials say a man also had to be treated for minor injuries. The investigation is ongoing, but reports say one woman has been arrested. No word yet on charges.
18-year-old wanted in Toronto shooting investigation

An 18-year-old is wanted by Toronto police after bullets flew in an apartment, earlier this week. Officers say, a man confronted four people in the hallway of the city’s northwest high-rise and fired shots. A 19-year-old was wounded. A warrant has been issued for Adrian Scott.
