The lawyer for a woman who calls herself the monkey’s “mom” argues that Darwin, who was found in an Ikea parking lot wearing a coat and a diaper in December, is clearly a domesticated pet. Yasmin Nakhuda is suing Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary, where the monkey has been held since animal services scooped him up. The judge reserved her decision but hasn’t said when she’ll make her ruling.

Provincial budget passes

June 11th, 2013 | Comments (0)

Ontario’s New Democrats kept their promise and voted to support the minority Liberal government’s budget, averting a summer election.  The budget passed by a vote of 64 to 36 in a major achievement for rookie Premier Kathleen Wynne, who took over as leader of the Liberal party from Dalton McGuinty in February.  Wynne says she kept her pledge to try to make the minority parliament work by ntroducing a budget that improves lives for Ontarians. NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says her party felt it was important to work with the Liberals to get changes in the budget rather than washing their hands of the issue like the Progressive Conservatives did.  Horwath says the budget contains several NDP ideas, including a youth jobs program, increased welfare rates, more money for home care services and the creation of a new Financial Accountability Officer.  Opposition Leader Tim Hudak lashed out at the NDP for propping up what he says is a corrupt government that tried to hide the cost of cancelling gas plants in Oakville and Mississauga, now an estimated $585 million.
