Toronto woman in serious condition following apartment fire

An elderly Toronto woman is fighting for her life after being severely injured in an apartment fire. A friend and neighbour says Maureen Huges suffered serious burns after her second floor apartment was engulfed in flames late Saturday morning. Huges, who is said to be in her 70′s, was rushed to hospital where she remains in life-threatening condition. The cause is still under investigation.
Toronto runners honour Boston victims in 10K race, Sunday

In response to the deadly Boston Marathon bombings, runners in Toronto honoured the victims, Sunday. A moment of silence was scheduled before the city’s Yonge Street 10-k Race. Participants likely saw more officers on the streets, as security was upped, following the attacks in Massachusetts. Elsewhere, runners will show solidarity with runners at the Boston attack on Monday; a race from Parliament Hill to the US Embassy is being organized.
GO Transit to start running trains every 30 minutes on Lakeshore lines

Great news for commuters who use the GO Train, as it will soon be easier to travel the Lakeshore lines. GO Trains that currently run hourly between Aldershot and Oshawa will run every 30 minutes, seven days a week beginning on June 29th. According to Transportation Minister Glen Murray, the change will add 263 new train trips each week. GO carries about 200,000 passengers each weekday and has the fifth highest commuter train ridership in North America.
Public high school teachers and support staff vote 84 per cent in favour of new deal with the province

Public high school teachers and support staff have overwhelming voted in support with a newly negotiated deal with the provincial government. According to the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation, members voted 84 per cent in favour of the agreement which will give teachers improved maternity leave and sick day benefits, as well as fewer unpaid days off. Premier Kathleen Wynne has said no additional money will be spent to improve the contract, but Tory education critic Lisa MacLeod estimates the deal will cost $114 million.
Toronto Police looking for man in connection with sexual assault on the York University campus

Toronto police are looking for a suspect after an alleged sexual assault on the York University campus. Police say a woman was walking on the campus yesterday when she noticed a man on a bicycle following her. Police say the man sexually assaulted her and then fled. The suspect is described as a young black man, 18 to 21 years old, about five feet six inches tall with a skinny build, wearing a black toque and dark clothing. Anyone with information is asked to contact police or crime stoppers.
Shooting in Toronto sends one man to hospital

Toronto police are looking for two suspects after a shooting that took place just after midnight in the Queen and Spadina area. Investigators say a 29 year-old man was shot on Vanauley Walk and had to be rushed to hospital. Investigators are searching for two suspects believed to be connected to the incident. No descriptions have been released as the victim is not co-operating with police.

An investigation by Toronto police into a suspicious package brought traffic and public transit to a crawl in the city’s financial district. Officers had to seal off a section near King and Yonge Streets after the item was spotted around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The area was eventually cleared for vehicles and pedestrians around 11:00 p.m. Few other details have been released.

Premier Kathleen Wynne says Ontario will move ahead with new levies to raise money for public transit upgrades in the g-t-a, even if municipalities oppose it. She says she’d prefer to have their support to raise the two-billion dollars a year that’s needed for transit improvements, But she says the governing Liberals will take action. Provincial transport agency Metrolinx is suggesting highway tolls, raising the sales tax and a half-cent-a-litre tax on gasoline. Other municipal politicians outside Toronto have been concerned about paying for improvements to services their residents don’t use.

New York man arrested and charged with G20 Summit related offences

Toronto Police have charged an American man with 26 offences, following the G20 Summit in Toronto, in 2010. Officers say 27-year-old Joel Saleem Bitar from New York, returned to Canada from the US and voluntarily surrendered to police on Tuesday. Th accused allegedly smashed windows of a cop car, while an officer was inside and smashed the windows of a Starbucks, ATMs, Subway sandwich and a TD branch. He also threw a rock at a line of police officers. He will appear in court on Wednesday.

Toronto Police have arrested a 33-year-old man after he tried to lure underage girls. Police say he posted an ad online, seeking teenagers to pose for a lingerie photo shoot. He believed he was communicating with someone under the age of 16-years-old, and officers say there could be more victims. Andrew Holbrook appeared in court this morning, and is facing a number of charges. He used various social media chat names, including: tigger_101a@hotmail.com and Austin_101. The search is on for a missing 15 year-old boy. Toronto police say Peining “John” Xu was last seen on Saturday around 5:30 p.m. in the King and Dufferin area. He is described as Asian, approximately 5’7, 128 pounds with brown eyes and short black hair. He was wearing a black, hooded, nylon, puffy, waist-length jacket with black jeans and running shoes.
