Ford scandal not over, Toronto councillors say

May 25th, 2013 | Comments (0)

At least one Toronto City Councillor says he doesn’t think Mayor Rob Ford is telling the truth. Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker says he thinks Ford should resign. The mayor finally addressed allegations he was caught smoking crack cocaine on Friday in a carefully-worded statement. Baeremaeker says instead of “acknowledging that there’s an issue and trying to get help, Ford made things worse by going on the attack. The editor of the American website Gawker.com, which first reported on the cellphone video, says Ford’s statement did not actually refute the allegations. John Cook notes Ford did not say outright that he never smoked crack cocaine. Meanwhile, The Globe and Mail also published an investigation on Saturday. The report alleges the mayor’s brother, Doug, sold hash in the 80’s, and another brother, Randy, was once charged with a drug-related kidnapping.

Mayor Ford lays low, following crack cocaine allegations

May 19th, 2013 | Comments (0)

It looks like Toronto Mayor Rob Ford won’t be appearing on his weekly radio show, “The City”, on Sunday. Ford is keeping a low profile after the  allegations he was captured on a cellphone video, appearing to smoke crack cocaine. The Mayor usually shares hosting duties for his two-hour talk show with his brother, Doug.  Ford has called the crack smoking allegations ridiculous — and part of a smear campaign by the Toronto Star. But City Councillor Josh Matlow is urging him to give a more detailed response. He says it would be unwise to remain silent.

Road trip season has officially begun and the CAA wants motorists to be prepared. They say one of the best things you can do before heading out is to plan your route… That sounds simple, but can often be overlooked. The CAA also suggests bringing a map in addition to a GPS. Also, it’s a good idea to check the forecast to make sure you’re packed up to handle any conditions. When it comes to the vehicle itself, make sure to change your oil, check you tire pressure and replace damaged wiper blades.

The Rubber Association of Canada says if you plan on driving anywhere to check your tires and make sure they are inflated properly and have the right tread depth. Communications Manager Antonia Issa says under-inflated tires not only are a safety risk, but also can hurt your pocketbook as well. By making sure your tires are inflated correctly, a motorist who drivers 20,000 kilometres can save about $100 a year on gas.

May 16th, 2013 | Comments (0)

Durham businesses want to see firm timelines on when transit expansion will happen in the region. That was the main message at consultations with the Ontario Chambers of Commerce about funding options for Metrolinx’s $2-billion dollar ‘Big Move’ project. CEO and General Manager of the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce Bob Malcolmson says some of the suggested revenue tools are just out of the question such as an employer payroll tax and development charges. Malcolmson says the consensus agreed to the use of highway tolls and fuel tax. The chamber’s full report is available by clicking here.
