Environment Canada issues special weather statement for Southern Ontario

A special weather statement has been issued by Environment Canada for most of Southern Ontario Tuesday. Eastern areas of the province are under a snowfall warning. The GTA can expect a mix of rain and wet snow during the days with possibilities of a flash freeze at night.
Oshawa food shop licensing fees will be frozen in 2012

The City of Oshawa has decided to freeze the licensing fees paid by food shops in the city. Some members of council were in favour of the proposed increase from $150, to $250. CEO of the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce Bob Malcolmson says the logistics behind an increase could be justified, however not without the input of the business community. Council is looking to trim spending and increase revenue for the 2012 budget.
Toronto City Council exploring ways to crackdown on gridlock

Commuters in Toronto should take note, city council is debating a motion to drastically increase traffic fines during rush hour. The measures, which are aimed at battling gridlock, would raise the fine for stopping or parking illegally during rush hour to $150.00 from $60.00. Also being discussed is increasing the fine for blocking a bike lane by the same amount. Rush hour is considered to be between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., and from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Whitchurch-Stouffville man dies a week after accident near York/Durham line

A 63 year old man from Whitchurch-Stouffville has succumbed to his injuries after a collision at York/Durham Townline and 19th Avenue. The unidentified man was driving a car eastbound on 19th, which was struck by a transport truck traveling southbound on the York/Durham line. The 31 year old driver of the transport was not injured. Police are urging any witnesses who saw the accident take place to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, or the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 1-866-876-5432.
Injunction upheld against York transit workers

An injunction against striking York Region transit workers has been upheld by an Ontario court. The ruling means workers will still be able to picket, but can only hold up buses for up to 3 minutes at a time. The municipality had asked for the injunction, saying the intensification of the pickets was creating unsafe conditions for motorists, pedestrians and transit riders. The strike is now into its 9th week, impacting close to 44,000 riders on a daily basis.
York Region Transit strike may be inching closer to a conclusion

One of the three striking unions in the now 9 week old York Region Transit strike may be close to a deal. ATU Local 113 President Bob Kinnear says they will consider the latest Viva proposal. Negotiations are also ongoing between ATU local 1587, Miller Transit and First Student.

A small glimmer of hope in the York Region Transit strike faded on Saturday after those representing one of the three unions striking and Veolia Transportation walked away from the table just hours after re-starting talks. A high ranking member of ATU Local 113 now says it looks as if arbitration will be the only way forward between the two sides. Viva bus drivers have been off the job since late October, a move that affects up to 44,000 people every day.

At least one of the unions involved in the York Region transit strike are heading back to the negotiating table today in an effort to put an end to the now seven week old work stoppage. ATU Local 113 representatives are in discussion with Veolia Transportation this morning, as a chunk of the 600 workers look to return to work. No reports of the other two unions holding talks this weekend. The strike affects up to 44,000 riders on a daily basis.
Crash shuts down the 404 in Richmond Hill

Police are investigating after a car crossed the median of the 404 and drove into oncoming traffic. OPP say the incident happened just before 8:00 am, Wednesday at the 404 and Elgin Mills in Richmond Hill. The woman who crossed the median has only minor injuries. The second driver was rushed to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The northbound highway was closed for several hours, but has been reopened.
401 in Oshawa closes for 10 hours following a tractor trailer crash

The Eastbound 401 in Oshawa was shutdown early Tuesday morning. A tractor trailer fire caused the highway to close between Stevenson and Harmony after 1:00 am. Durham Police say a tractor trailer hit a concrete barrier, spraying debris across the highway, and burst into flames after pulling over under the Albert Street Bridge. Two occupants got out safely. However, the truck was completely destroyed by flames. The highway reopened at 11:00 am.
Cyclist hit in Whitby

A cyclist hit in Whitby Tuesday morning. Durham Police say the accident in the Brock Street and Dundas area, happened just before 6:00 am. The area is expected to remain closed while officers investigate. The cyclist’s injuries aren’t believed to be serious and the driver of the vehicle is cooperating with police.
Pedestrian killed after being struck by a car on the 401

The OPP continue to investigate after a female pedestrian was killed after being struck by a car on the 401 near Martin Grove Road. The accident happened near 1 o’clock Saturday morning, with authorities, including the Traffic Support Unit still attempting to piece together how the event unfolded. The name of the woman has not been released.
