April 5th, 2013 | Comments (0)

A report into Toronto’s ‘Below Market Rental’ program says the initiative has let the city’s poor tenants down. She also says the city failed to provide the tenant agencies with written notices of increases. Councillors have unanimously voted to adopt 22 recommendations tabled in her report, including apologizing to tenants for the treatment they received.

April 4th, 2013 | Comments (0)

The province is trying to get to the bottom of why watered down chemotherapy drugs were given out to 990 cancer patients. Premier Kathleen Wynne calls the situation very worrisome, while Health Minister Deb Matthews says experts have assured her the health risks from the watered down cancer drugs were minimal. Patients affected were treated or are being treated at Lakeridge Health in Oshawa, London Health Sciences Centre, Windsor Regional Hospital and Peterborough Regional Health Centre. The reasoning for the issue was the fact there was too much saline added to the bags containing the chemo medications, effectively watering down the drugs by up to 20 per cent. Some patients were getting under-dosed for as long as a year. According to one oncologist, it’s likely the worry and anxiety is harder on the patients that the negative effect of the cancer treatment.

Province lowers cap on annual tuition fee increases for post-secondary institutions

March 28th, 2013 | Comments (0)

The latest announcement by the Ontario government to lower the cap on average tuition fee increases for public post-secondary institutions is getting a mixed reaction. The framework caps fee increases by an average of three per cent. In the past, colleges and universities were allowed to increase by an average of five per cent. Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, Brad Duguid says the policy strikes a balance between increasing affordability while helping institutions with long-term financial balance. President and CEO of Colleges Ontario Linda Franklin disagrees, saying the restrictions will make it more difficult to deliver quality programs. President of the College Student Alliance Ciara Byrne is happy the ministry changed the status quo but would have liked to see a 2-year freeze followed by linking tuition increases to the rate of inflation.
