May 8th, 2013 | Comments (0)

The most recent snapshot of Canadian culture has been released by Statistics Canada. The numbers are out from the voluntary National Household Survey, which replaced the mandatory long-form census after much debate. Among the highlights, Canada is more diverse than at any point in its history. The data shows Canada is home to about 6.7 million immigrants, equaling about 20.6 per cent of the total population. Asia, including the Middle East, continues to be the biggest source of immigrants but there’s a slight increase in the number of people coming from Africa and the Caribbean. In terms of religion, more Canadians described themselves as non-believers than ever before at 7.8 million. Christianity is still far away the top faith with over 22 million followers. May 7th, 2013 | Comments (0)

Waste Diversion Ontario will be redesigning the province’s database for residential garbage. The “Municipal Datacall” is a reporting system that has been used by municipalities every year since 2003 to submit data to WDO on their waste activities, with a closer focus on the Blue Box tonnes recycled and Program operating cost. The main goals for the redesign are to end up with a system that allows faster and easier reporting and provide a more accurate data for WDO to analyze and report on to the public. WDO is working with municipal and industry representatives to make sure the redesign is ready for reporting in 2014. Over 95 percent of Ontarians in about 400 municipalities are participating in the residential Blue Box Program. This is cost-shared between Ontario’s municipalities and Stewardship Ontario, a not-for-profit organization. It is governed and funded by the industry producers of the Blue Box material.

Provincial Liberals prepared to tweak budget, but won’t negotiate its contents

May 4th, 2013 | Comments (0)

Ontario’s Premier says she’s prepared to make “tweaks” to the budget, but is not ready to restart negotiations with the NDP on major changes.  The New Democrats say they won’t support the minority government’s budget unless there are some changes … like making the Liberals more accountable for things like the gas plant scandal. Kathleen Wynne says she’s not afraid of an election if the opposition parties join forces to defeat the budget. The NDP want to consult voters before deciding if they should support the budget, which met most of their demands, or vote with the Tories to defeat the government. Meanwhile,  it’s more than politicians that are criticizing Wynne on the budget. The President of The Ontario Public Service Employees Union is urging the Premier to reinstate some youth employment programs – the Ontario Ranger and Ontario Place programs. Smokey Thomas says it could bring thousands of jobs to young people. However, the budget already designates $295-million to help alleviate youth unemployment.
