Public high school teachers and support staff vote 84 per cent in favour of new deal with the province

Public high school teachers and support staff have overwhelming voted in support with a newly negotiated deal with the provincial government. According to the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation, members voted 84 per cent in favour of the agreement which will give teachers improved maternity leave and sick day benefits, as well as fewer unpaid days off. Premier Kathleen Wynne has said no additional money will be spent to improve the contract, but Tory education critic Lisa MacLeod estimates the deal will cost $114 million.
Peel Police arrest young offender in Darcel Avenue shooting

Peel Regional Police have arrested a 16 year-old young offender in relation to a shooting incident on Darcel Avenue. On Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at approximately 2:00 p.m. police received a 911 call for a shooting in the area of Darcel Avenue, in Mississauga. When police arrived they located a 19 year-old Mississauga male, suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a Toronto area trauma center in critical condition. The victim has since been upgraded to stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. The young offender was located at his residence on Wednesday, April 17, 2013. He was arrested without incident. He is charged with Attempted Murder and numerous Firearms related charges. Due to the age of the accused, his name cannot be released as per the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. York Police seek witnesses following serious collision

The York Regional Police Collision Investigation Unit is asking for witnesses after a serious crash in Aurora on Tuesday. Investigators say a white 2010 Mercedez Benz sedan was travelling west on Bloomington Road near Academy Drive around 11:30 p.m., when the driver lost control and struck a bulldozer parked off the roadway. The 70 year driver from Aurora was transported to hospital with minor injuries and a 61 year-old female passenger was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Investigators believe the driver of a white minivan may have witnessed the collision and are asking him/her or anyone who may have information to contact police at 1-8666-876-5423 ext. 7704.
Premier Wynne says Ontario will move ahead with new levies for transit funding

Premier Kathleen Wynne says Ontario will move ahead with new levies to raise money for public transit upgrades in the g-t-a, even if municipalities oppose it. She says she’d prefer to have their support to raise the two-billion dollars a year that’s needed for transit improvements, But she says the governing Liberals will take action. Provincial transport agency Metrolinx is suggesting highway tolls, raising the sales tax and a half-cent-a-litre tax on gasoline. Other municipal politicians outside Toronto have been concerned about paying for improvements to services their residents don’t use.
Former volunteer wanted on sex assault charges in Peel Region

A former volunteer with several child care agencies in the GTA is wanted on sex assault charges by Peel police. Investigators say 54 year-old Mehdi Mirza Ali of Brampton volunteered with the Peel and Toronto Catholic Children’s Aid Societies and was responsible for driving children around to appointments. The sex assault offences are believed to have happened over a four month period. Police are concerned there may be other victims. U.O.I.T/Durham College student charged with threatening teacher

A 50 year-old male student at the U.O.I.T./Durham College campus in north Oshawa has been arrested after a four week investigation for making death threats to a teacher. Investigators say the man got into a verbal altercation with the educator over his grades and threatened to kill the teacher and the teachers family if he didn’t pass. He is facing four counts of threatening death. His identity is not being disclosed to protect the identity of others involved.
Man taken to hospital after being shot during violent home invasion in Brampton

A shooting at a home in Brampton has sent one man to hospital. Peel police are still looking for suspects following the incident, which took place around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday at a home on Sunnybrook Crescent, which is in the McLaughlin and Bovaird area. The victim was rushed to hospital where he is recovering.
Police close intersection in Toronto’s east-end to investigate girl’s death

Toronto Police have returned to an east-end intersection where a five-year-old girl was struck and killed by a garbage truck. Kayleigh Callaghan-Belanger was walking home from school when she was hit, last month. Three other children were also injured. Kayleigh’s death has led city council to launch a review in hopes of preventing another such tragedy. The truck itself was brought back to the scene Saturday to help investigators understand exactly what happened.

Police in Mississauga are investigating after a shooting, Friday night. Officers say it happened before 8:30 p.m., near Steeles and Finch. Peel Police say a man was found with a gunshot wound, and remains in hospital in critical condition. There is no word on suspects yet.
York Police seize over $1M worth of marijuana

York Police have seized over $1-million worth of marijuana in a Vaughan home. Officers say the house was being rented, and the homeowner became suspicious after numerous attempts to contact the tenants. Police investigated the Spring Arbour Road home, and during a search warrant discovered a fully-functioning indoor marijuana grow operation. Police are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
Four arrested in retail theft ring

One man and three women have been charged by Toronto Police for their parts in an organized retail theft ring. It’s alleged the accused worked in groups to target display cases at a variety of retail outlets including electronics and jewellery stores. The thefts are believed to have taken place across the province, including in Toronto, York, Peel and Halton regions. The total value of the goods stolen is still being determined but is pegged around $45,000 dollars. 49 year-old Paul Dixon, 49 year-old Jowanna Dixon, 42 year-old Leah Sinclair and 28 year-old Chrystal Shamachuk.
Heavy rain, ice pellets and freezing rain hits parts of the GTA

Winter is taking one last kick at the GTA on Thursday as a system moves in carrying heavy rain, ice pellets and strong wind. Environment Canada Meteorologist Mark Schuster says the storm could result in a major ice storm with widespread power outages possible due to downed lines. All motorists are being urged to slow down and drive to the conditions. Meantime, anyone flying out of Pearson Airport is asked to check ahead for cancellations.
