May 12th, 2013 | Comments (0)

The hunt for a missing Ancaster man is in critical hours, says Hamilton Superintendent Dan Kinsella. Police in Mississauga have arrested Dellen Millard, while he was driving on Cawthra road Saturday. Officers have charged him with forcible confinement and theft. They also believe he was the one behind the wheel of the pickup truck during the test drive that 32-year-old Tim Bosma never returned from. More information is surfacing about the 27-year-old Toronto man. Millard is reportedly the heir to Millard Air, a charter airline out of Toronto, and once held the world record for the youngest solo helicopter flight. The second suspect is still at large. Police are encouraging anyone with information to call the tip line at 905-546-2100.

Canada’s unemployment rate remains unchanged at 7.2 per cent

May 10th, 2013 | Comments (0)

Canada’s employment picture seems to have improved a bit following the loss of almost 55,000 jobs in March. Stats Canada reports a net gain of 12,500 jobs in April, which keeps the unemployment rate unchanged at 7.2 per cent. Chief Economist with the Canadian Labour Congress, Sylvain Schetagne says this report was better in the details as there were 36,000 full- time workers added in the month, although most of those were in the public sector. Schetagne says the unemployment rate in Oshawa fell from 8.6 per cent to 8.3 per cent. However, he attributes that to a retreat in the number of people looking for work.

Residential construction slows across Ontario in April

May 9th, 2013 | Comments (0)

Housing starts in Toronto edged lower in April, largely due to a decline in apartment starts. April figures have been released by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and they show just under 34,000 units were started in the city. In the Oshawa CMA, which includes Whitby and Clarington, just over 1,500 units were started. Analysts believe fewer single-detached and multi-family homes on the market are curbing new construction downward. As a whole, residential activity across Ontario slowed last month due to limited job growth and increased options in the resale market.

The latest snapshot of Canadian culture released by Statistics Canada

May 8th, 2013 | Comments (0)

The most recent snapshot of Canadian culture has been released by Statistics Canada. The numbers are out from the voluntary National Household Survey, which replaced the mandatory long-form census after much debate. Among the highlights, Canada is more diverse than at any point in its history. The data shows Canada is home to about 6.7 million immigrants, equaling about 20.6 per cent of the total population. Asia, including the Middle East, continues to be the biggest source of immigrants but there’s a slight increase in the number of people coming from Africa and the Caribbean. In terms of religion, more Canadians described themselves as non-believers than ever before at 7.8 million. Christianity is still far away the top faith with over 22 million followers. You can find complete details of the survey by clicking here.
