Mayor Ford lays low, following crack cocaine allegations

May 19th, 2013 | Comments (0)

It looks like Toronto Mayor Rob Ford won’t be appearing on his weekly radio show, “The City”, on Sunday. Ford is keeping a low profile after the  allegations he was captured on a cellphone video, appearing to smoke crack cocaine. The Mayor usually shares hosting duties for his two-hour talk show with his brother, Doug.  Ford has called the crack smoking allegations ridiculous — and part of a smear campaign by the Toronto Star. But City Councillor Josh Matlow is urging him to give a more detailed response. He says it would be unwise to remain silent.

A walkout in advance of the Victoria Day long-weekend would have been the first in the agency’s 87-year history. No details have been released pending ratification from both sides. LCBO spokesperson Heather McGregor says the agreement is fair to taxpayers and the 6,700 employees. Head of the union’s bargaining team, Denise Davis, says the deal meets workers’ expectations and is recommending they accept it.

The Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce weighs in on transit funding options

May 16th, 2013 | Comments (0)

Durham businesses want to see firm timelines on when transit expansion will happen in the region. That was the main message at consultations with the Ontario Chambers of Commerce about funding options for Metrolinx’s $2-billion dollar ‘Big Move’ project. CEO and General Manager of the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce Bob Malcolmson says some of the suggested revenue tools are just out of the question such as an employer payroll tax and development charges. Malcolmson says the consensus agreed to the use of highway tolls and fuel tax. The chamber’s full report is available by clicking here.

Hudak to testify at hearings into gas plant cancellations in Mississauga and Oakville

May 14th, 2013 | Comments (0)

Hearings into the decision to cancel gas plants in Mississauga and Oakville will continue on Tuesday, as Tory leader Tim Hudak gets set to testify. Hudak says the smell of the scandal, which cost over $585 million, has come a little too close to Premier Kathleen Wynne and former Premier Dalton McGuinty. Hudak says he’s worried the Liberals are trying to turn the hearings into a circus. NDP leader Andrea Horwath says she isn’t sure what light Hudak can shed on the gas plants scandal. The Liberals insist Hudak made the same campaign promise as they did to scrap the Mississauga gas plant, so they’ll ask what the Progressive Conservatives thought the cost would be.
