Three men are being sought after vehicles were vandalized in Oshawa. Durham police say the incidents happened last month on residential driveways on Florell Drive. Some of the vehicles received extensive damage after the suspects used objects to scratch them. The first suspect is described as male, white, with a medium build, beard and moustache and wearing a white coat. The second Suspect is described as male, white, with a medium build, beard and moustache and wearing dark clothing and the third Suspect is described as male, white, with a moustache and wearing dark clothing. A 30 year old Ajax man has been arrested for being the central figure in a major break and enter ring in the GTA. The investigation by Durham police began back in November of 2012 and culminated in numerous arrests and the seizure of approximately $500,000 in property, drugs, cash and vehicles, including a Lamborghini. Durham police responded to numerous break and enters in the region and pegged a main suspect, then ‘Project Nipigon’ was born. In the first few months of 2013, detectives followed the man and his network used to receive the stolen goods. Wrayal Dacosta of Ajax is facing 28 charges in connection with these residential break-ins. In addition, eight people were arrested, mostly from Mississauga, and are facing a variety of charges, including possession of stolen property. Arrest warrants are out for four more people as the investigation continues.

Ikea monkey’s owner is no longer facing abuse allegations

The Ikea monkey’s owner is no longer being accused of abuse. Yasmin Nakhuda who describes herself as Darwin’s “mom,” is suing the Sunderland primate sanctuary to get him back, alleging animal services tricked her into surrendering him. At the beginning of the trial on Thursday in Oshawa, the lawyer for the Story Book Farm Primate sanctuary said it was withdrawing previous abuse allegations in the interest of keeping the trial short.
Durham Police handing out crime prevention tips to Ajax residents

Heads up to some Ajax residents! Durham Police officers, including members of the DRP Auxiliary Unit will be canvassing door to door with homeowners in the Duffins Bay subdivision Thursday evening. They will be knocking on doors between 6 and 8 p.m. to offer residents some crime prevention tips and advice. Officers will be reminding residents to lock their vehicles and remove valuables from view. The initiative is in response to an increase in theft from vehicles during the summer months.
UOIT undergoes study on advanced energy conservation

UOIT is continuing to invest in sustainable living with the announcement of a one-million dollar research partnership. The school is pairing up with Qatar University to look at advanced energy conservation and how to use it in neighbourhoods and industrial facilities. Doctor Hossam Gaber says it’s another great energy initiative made by the university. Gaber says this will make UOIT a global leader in building sustainable communities.
Enbridge’s plan for Line 9 to be discussed at a meeting in Port Perry

Concerned Durham Region residents will be meeting in Port Perry tonight to discuss a plan by Enbridge to pump more oil through the ‘Line 9’ pipeline. Vice-President of Durham-Clear, Stacey Leadbetter, says the 37 year old pipeline stretches from Sarnia to Montreal, and cross through northern parts of Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington. Leadbetter says in 2010, an Enbridge pipeline of a similar age and design as Line 9, ruptured near the Kalamazoo River in Michigan. The event starts at 7p.m. at the Queen Beans Coffee House.
Durham police investigating break and enter at the Oshawa council office

Durham police are investigating a major break and enter at the Oshawa municipal building. Security officials contacted police Tuesday afternoon after finding signs of forcible entry in the council office. Police say the mayor and council office had been broken into and councillors’ mailboxes were opened. It’s still unclear if anything was taken or what exactly the suspect was looking for. Police are reviewing surveillance footage. The investigation is on-going.
Despite speculation, Jim Flaherty wants to stay on as finance minister until the budget is balanced

Any speculation that Jim Flaherty may be preparing to leave in the next cabinet shuffle has been shot down. According to Flaherty’s chief spokesman, the finance minister and Whitby-Oshawa MP wants to keep his job until the budget is balanced, which is expected in 2015. Ill health and Flaherty’s long tenure as finance minister has prompted speculation about when he may decide to step down from the post. Flaherty does have a serious skin disorder that requires him to take steroids, causing his neck and face to swell.
Commuters greeted by rain and slick roads in many parts of the GTA

GTA residents better keep their umbrellas and rain boots handy. Commuters will be greeted by slick roads and are being urged to slow down and be careful during the morning commute. Despite the fact Environment Canada has called off a rainfall warning in most areas, another 50 millimetres could touch down throughout Wednesday. There are also reports of flooding in Toronto, with the worst at the lower end of the Don Valley Parkway. The highway has been closed in both directions from the south end at the Gardiner Expressway north to Bloor Street because of flooding.
Hearings begin for relicensing Pickering’s nuclear generating station

The city of Pickering is supporting Ontario Power Generation’s application to extend the license of their generating station. OPG wants the province’s oldest nuclear plant to keep running until 2020. Mayor Dave Ryan says it’s the largest single employer in the city and they don’t want to lose it yet. Hearings about the application begin Wednesday and are expected to be very heated because of strong opposition from various groups such as Greenpeace.

Durham police say the Tudor Rose Pub on Westney Road South was empty when someone broke in through the front door last wednesday around 5:00am. Durham Police are requesting the public’s assistance in locating a missing 39 year old schizophrenic man who is without his medication. Ahsan Malik left Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Sciences in Whitby last night. He is a long-term voluntary patient. Ahsan was last seen at the Whitby GO Station, but it is not known if he boarded the train. He has a family member who lives in Brampton. He is described 6’ 2 with a medium build. He has brown skin and is of East Indian descent. He has brown hair, and is balding on the top of his head. He was last seen wearing a grey jacket with white fabric in the armpit area, dark pants and tan-coloured high-top hiking boots. Ahsan is without his medication and is known to speak to himself. He has been known to become aggressive, especially with females. He left Ontario Shores with no money, cellphone or identification. Anyone with information about Ahsan’s whereabouts is asked to call Durham Regional Police immediately at 1-888-579-1520.
