Heads up for motorists and emergency responders. The Durham Region Works Department would like to advise everyone of a new water main being installed on Bloor Street East in Oshawa. A onetime road closure will take place on May 7th from 8p.m. until 6 a.m. The closure will be between Harmony Road and Grandview Street.
Durham Police look for man seen dumping wire sheathing

Police are trying to identify a man who disposed of three garbage bags full of wire sheathing—minus the wire—in Bowmanville on Tuesday. At approximately 1:30 p.m., a man driving a Jeep Cherokee parked in a municipal parking lot in the Stevens Road and Clarington Boulevard area of Bownmanville and pried open the locked cover of a dumpster and shoved three garbage bags into it. The man fled when he noticed someone had witnessed him in the act. Several other garbage bags were seen in his vehicle. Investigators found the bags contained sheathing associated with heavy-gauge wire. The new wire removed from the sheathing is valued at approximately $3,000. Investigators would like to identify the man to discover why he was dumping the sheathing. The male is described as: white, 35-40 years old, 5’ 11” tall with a thin build and tattoos on his forearm. Oshawa man flees Durham Police on homemade motorcycle

A 43 year old Oshawa man is facing charges after allegedly fleeing from police on a homemade motorcycle. According to authorities, around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, an officer spotted the man driving a small, extremely loud, homemade chopper style motorcycle on the sidewalk in the Simcoe and Erie Street area. The officer attempted to pull the man over, however he fled along a bike path. A short time later, the suspect was found at a home on Malaga Road. Vincent Lynch has been charged.
The CAA launches its 10th annual Worst Roads campaign

Potholes, crumbling pavement and congestion are just some of the complaints that officials with the CAA want to hear about during the 10th annual Worst Roads campaign. Officials with the CAA and from all levels of government agree on just how important road infrastructure is, but keeping everything up to date does come with a hefty price tag. Spokesperson for the Association, Faye Lyons, says each year there is over $2 billion collected in gas taxes and they believe that money should be going directly into road infrastructure, something that impacts health, safety and the economy. Last year, Dufferin Street in Toronto was branded the worst of the worst. In Durham Region, Ritson Road in Oshawa is never too far from the discussion. Suspect in connection with Bownmanville theft turns herself in

A woman suspect of stealing an elderly lady’s wallet at a bowmanville grocery store has turned herself in. On April14 the lady was shopping and discovered her wallet missing from her purse when she arrived to the check-out. The victim had been shopping with her grandchild and may have temporarily left her purse unattended. On Monday the suspect went to police returned the wallet and turned herself in. 46 year old Lorelei Abel is charged with theft under $5,000.
Two people sent to hospital with smoke inhalation following fire at Oshawa seniors apartment building

Two people had to be taken to hospital for smoke inhalation following a fire at an Oshawa seniors apartment building. Officials say the blaze broke out just after 6:00 a.m. Wednesday at ‘Faith Place’ which is on William Street, in the Simcoe and Centre area. The investigation into the cause of the fire, which originated on the sixth floor, is ongoing.
Stock Transportation and the CAW reach a new deal to avoid strike for nearly 600 bus drivers

Bus service in Toronto will be as usual on Wednesday. Stock Transportation and the union representing around 600 bus drivers reached a tentative agreement around 11:00 p.m. Tuesday, avoiding a possible strike. President of CAW Local 4268 Debra Montgomery, thanks parents for their understanding during the uncertainty. Wages were believed to be one of the key issues in the negotiations but no specific details of the deal have been released. A strike would have impacted thousands of students in the Toronto public and Catholic boards.
Whitby Mental hospital says residents shouldn’t be concerned about Kachkar’s community privileges

The Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences wants Whitby residents to know they are extremely careful when escorting patents into the community. 46 year old Richard Kachkar, who was found not criminally responsible for killing a Toronto police officer with a snowplow, will reside at the facility with possible visits into the town. Medical Director Dr. Karen De Freitas says residents have no need to worry because patients have to earn privileges such as escorted visits and they can be revoked or restricted at any time. Kachkar will remain at the facility for undetermined period of time until an annual review board believes he no longer poses a threat to society.
Whitby to fight election sign clutter

The town of Whitby is trying to combat the clutter caused by election signs by implementing stricter rules. Mayor Pat Perkins says they want to set up restrictions on the size of signs and where they can be placed. Perkins says they set up an online survey to get public feedback on the proposed changes. Oshawa Council approves $3-million for renovations to the Harman Park Arena

The city of Oshawa continues to show strong support for sports and recreation. Last night, council unanimously approved a $3-million budget for renovating the Harman Park Arena. Mayor John Henry says arenas are a huge part of the fabric of the community. Henry says Oshawa has become a sports hub lately with the OFSAA track and field championships coming in June, the women’s world lacrosse championship in July, and the boxing event for the 2015 pan-am games. The money will go towards improving the rink’s efficiency and ice making equipment, parking lot, as well as an overhaul of amenities and accessibly.
Durham Police offer tips on spotting a grow op in your neighbourhood

After two big Grow Op busts in Durham recently, police are asking you to report anything suspicious you see in your neighbourhood. Spokesperson Dave Selby says there are a few things you can keep an eye out for such as no snow on the roof of the house during the winter. Selby says if you suspect a house in your neighbourhood of growing marijuana, contact police or Crime Stoppers and never approach them yourself.
Horrific discovery in Pickering park has Durham police investigating a possible case of animal cruelty

The investigation is underway for Durham police after a horrific discovery in a Pickering park. Officials say on Sunday, officers were called to Summer Park, in the Finch and Altona area, after a resident found a decomposing dog’s head. During an initial investigation, it’s believed the head was cut off by a sharp tool. Authorities remind everyone that animal cruelty is a serious crime and will be fully looked into.
