Two men charged with stealing from an Ajax drug store

Two men have been arrested in connection to a theft after employees at a drug store in the Kingston and Salem area of Ajax witnessed two men stealing. Durham police executed a search warrant in Mississauga on Sunday and arrested 49-year-old Adam Zajackowski and 22-year-old Michel Kowalski, charging them in connection to the April 26th incident. Police also seized $3,000 worth of stolen goods.

A pair of safety campaigns this month will focus on taking impaired drivers off Durham Region roads

The battle against impaired driving continues in Durham Region. Officers will be out in full force this month, taking part in a pair of R.I.D.E. campaigns. Police will be setting up spot checks from between May 13th and the 17th for National Road Safety Week. Also, due to the increased amount of people at bars and restaurants for the NHL playoffs, police will be conducting more spot checks in Pickering and Ajax throughout the month. Residents are asked to plan ahead before going out, whether relying on a designated driver, cab or transit.

Alcohol not believed to have been a factor in vehicle rollover in Brock Township

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in a single-vehicle crash in Brock Township. Durham police say three people needed to be taken to hospital following the collision, which took place Saturday night on Regional Road 12, in the Highway 12 and Sideline 17 area. The 17 year-old driver remains in hospital in critical but stable condition after being partially ejected during the rollover. Two passengers, both in their early 20s, were treated for non-life threatening injuries. Any witnesses to the crash are being asked to contact the Collision Investigations Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5252.

City of Oshawa hosts crime prevention workshop

You can make your home safer while doing your spring landscaping. The City of Oshawa is holding a free forum about crime prevention through exterior renovation. Councilor Bob Chapman there are some simple things people tend to overlook, like lighting and shrubbery. The forum is happening Tuesday at 7  p.m.at the Northview Community Centre at 150 Beatrice Street East. Attendees are asked to email safecity@oshawa.ca to register for the event.  Click here for more details.

Teen arrested after stabbing near Whitby school

A teen has been arrested after a violent fight near a Whitby school. Durham Police say just after noon on Friday, they were called to the Rossland and Country Line area – near Donald A. Wilson – after a fight broke out between two boys. One 17-year-old suffered non-life threatening stab wounds, and was taken to hospital. After a search of the area, officers managed to locate and arrest the other boy in a wooded area. Anyone with more information is being asked to call police.

Applied research projects underway at Durham College

Staff and students at Durham College were recognized for their efforts in applied research. The college hosted its annual Research Day recently, which shed some light on projects underway on campus. Director of the College’s Office of Research Services and Innovation, Debbie McKee Demczyk, says the work being done is very meaningful for all involved. She says the college is always looking for input from other businesses and hopes the ongoing research encourages more partnerships in the future.

Scouts plant over 300 native species of trees throughout Oshawa

Scout troops will be making the City of Oshawa a little bit greener on Saturday. Director of Parks and Environmental Services Brad Rosnak says the troops will be helping plant over 300 native species of trees and shrubs throughout the city. He says planting trees not only beautifies the city but also provides clean air.  Several hundred scouts will be participating in this year’s event. Click here for more information.

Durham Police charge Oshawa man with street racing

Speeding accounts for 25 per cent of all collision-related deaths. That’s the reminder from Durham Police this weekend. This message coming after street racing in Oshawa, earlier this week. Officers charged a 40-year-old man, following stunt racing near the Oshawa Centre. Police say David Mitchell of Waverly Street North in Oshawa was clocked near 80 kilometres an hour while passing a funeral home in the city. He is facing various charges, including  Racing, Careless Driving, Fail to Stop for Police and Fail to Surrender Driver’s License.  His vehicle was impounded and his license was suspended for seven days.

Hundreds of shops take part in Free Comic Book Day

Comic lovers have a lot to celebrate, this weekend. Not only has Iron Man 3 opened in theatres, but Saturday is also Free Comic Book Day. Hundreds of shops will be participating in the annual event, which is held the first Saturday of May. The first Free Comic Book Day was in 2002, and is meant to celebrate the diverse story lines that capture imaginations of millions. A number of comic book stores in the Durham Region are hosting events, including Heroic Dreams in Pickering, who are encouraging participants to get into costume to receive additional comics, while GNU Books in Oshawa is holding a costume contest, with  door prizes and refreshments.

California man charged with sexual assault for incident in Oshawa

Durham Police have laid sexual assault charges against a 30 year old California man.  According to authorities, a student at Kingsway College in Oshawa reported that a guest speaker touched her inappropriately on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.  Christopher Quevedo, who was at the school as a guest speaker, has been charged.

Marijuana grow op busted in Orangeville

A large marijuana grow op was dismantled by Durham Police, and a 44 year old man is facing numerous charges.  On Thursday, officers searched a home in Mulmur, just north of Orangeville.  An indoor marijuana grow op was dismantled and approximately 300 plants, worth an estimated street value of $300,000 were seized.  John Oster was charged with 66 offences, including fraud for allegedly creating fictitious identities to obtain mortgages for residences used for the production of marijuana.

17 year old arrested in connection with Subway restaurant robbery in Ajax

Durham police arrested a 17 year old boy in connection with a January robbery at an Ajax restaurant. The boy cannot be named under the youth criminal justice act and has been charged with robbery with a firearm, and weapons offences.
