The town of Ajax is introducing online voting for the next municipal election

Soon you’ll have no reason not to vote in an election, at least in an Ajax municipal election. The town has introduced online voting, something Deputy Clerk Nicole Wellsbury says will be a lot like filling out a survey. She says once the vote is cast, it’s struck off the voter’s list automatically and will be severed from the elector’s identity, so there’s no way to link a person to a ballot.
Oshawa Libraries holds camping workshop for outdoor newbies

The McLaughlin Branch is bringing an interactive Learn to Camp presentation, which will teach participants about nature and provide valuable information about camping. Durham residents encouraged to donate household items for next Reuse Day

Looking to unload some household items? The Region of Durham is hosting another Reuse Day on June 15th, and residents are being encouraged drop off their items. The aim of the event is to divert reusable items from landfills, and share them with charitable organizations. The donations will be divided between Habitat for Humanity’s ReStores, Canadians Diabetes Association, Goodwill and the Salvation Army. To date, more then 22 tonnes of good-quality material has been donated. The event runs from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at 4600 Garrard Road in Whitby. Click here for more information or call 1-800-667-5671.
Clarington school bus driver charged after asking student on date

A Clarington school bus driver is facing charges after allegedly trying to arrange a date with a 14 year-old female student of St. Stephens’s Secondary School. Durham Police, say the girl was being dropped off last Monday, the man exited the bus and followed her, making attempts to arrange a meeting. 60 year-old Craig Brand has been charged with criminal harassment and has been removed from service by the bus company.
Road work in the town of Ajax

Attention drivers. There will be daily lane restrictions on Bayly Street in Ajax for road improvements. The short-term closures will be from just east of MacKenzie Avenue to west of Kitney Drive. Work will be completed by June 17th, weather permitting. Drivers are asked to exercise caution for pedestrian safety and for construction worker safety.
Clarington conducting a survey on services available in the municipality

The municipality of Clarington wants residents’ help to improve services in the community. Corporate Initiatives Officer Curry Clifford says they’ve launched an online survey to get public feedback. The survey is available online until June 7th. Click here for the survey.
Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa wants to hear from federal counterpart on the issue of paying for transit expansion

An urgent meeting is being requested between Ontario’s finance minister and his federal counterpart, Whitby-Oshawa MP Jim Flaherty. Charles Sousa wants the federal finance minister to participate in a discussion about the best ways to pay for transit expansion in Ontario, after Flaherty rejected the idea of a regional tax hike. The proposal of a one percentage point increase of the HST for residents of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas was just one of the ideas put forward by Metrolinx recently.
Town of Whitby moving ahead with plans to allow home businesses in all neighbourhoods

The Town of Whitby is moving forward with a zoning bylaw amendment to allow home businesses in all areas. Councillor Don Mitchell says the new laws are much more comprehensive. He adds council worked hard to balance requests from residents who don’t want any businesses in their areas by leaving in place tight rules that limit signage, traffic, sounds, and smells.
Durham police investigate first homicide of 2013

A 34 year-old Oshawa woman has been charged with second degree murder in the death of an 89 year-old woman. Durham police say just before 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, officers were called to an apartment on Wayne Avenue where they found the body of an elderly woman. The victim has been identified as Alletta Rusnell. Homicide investigators believe there was an altercation overnight that resulted in the death, and the victim’s body has been sent to the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service in Toronto for a post mortem. The accused has been identified as Sharon Baksh. Anyone with new information is asked to contact Detective Haight of the DRPS Homicide Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5247. This is the first homicide in Durham Region in 2013.
Abilities Centre celebrates one year anniversary with event in Whitby

After reaching nearly 3,000 members, the Abilities Centre has a lot to celebrate. Sunday is the first anniversary of the centre in Whitby, and Special Events Director Stephanie Mann says they are holding a free event that’s open to the entire community. It runs from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at 55 Gordon Street. The centre is a charitable organization that delivers enriching sports, arts, music, and life skills opportunities for all ages and abilities. Second annual Oshawa’s farmers market now open

You might notice a bit more foot traffic in Oshawa’s downtown. The second annual farmer’s market is now open, located on the Victoria Street pedestrian walkway beside the regent theatre. Manager Jesse Cullen says the market provides many spinoff benefits for local business and the city. Cullen also says the market will be open weekly from 10am until 3pm, hopefully running until sometime in October.
Habitat for Humanity makes dreams come true for four Oshawa families

Four families in Oshawa will be given the keys to their new homes Saturday. A ceremony is taking place at the newly constructed building on Centre Street. Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Mary Bone expects it will be an extremely emotional time for everyone who has been involved in the project. Bone says this is the first-part of the major development that will result in a total of 24 units. The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.
