May 14th, 2013 | Comments (0)

Local food is more important than most people think. Environmental coordinator for the city of Oshawa Suzanne Elston says part of the city’s strategic plan is building resilient local food systems. She says if there was a major catastrophe, fresh food would only be available at local grocery stores for three days and with that in mind they’re encouraging residents to grow their own food. The city is holding free “Tuesday’s at the table” sessions again this year to give residents tips on how to grow their own food. Click here for more information on the event or click here to listen to Terry Johnston’s full interview with Suzanne Elston.

Need for acceptance highlighted by students at Pine Ridge

May 12th, 2013 | Comments (0)

Music can be a very powerful tool, and members of the Durham Police Heat band are using it to promote diversity and put a stop to bullying. The band took the stage at Pine Ridge Secondary School in Pickering recently, launching a new C.D., entitled ‘I Am Who I Am’. Constable Scott Dargie says the music spreads the message of acceptance. Students at Pine Ridge have been champions in the battle against bullying, creating the ‘I Am Who I Am’ movement in the wake of the death of Mitchell Wilson. The 11 year-old Pickering boy took his own life in 2011, in large part due to being a victim of bullying.
