Police searching for suspect after attempted child abduction in Bowmanville

One family is thanking their lucky stars, after an eight-year-old was almost grabbed. The little girl told officers she was playing outside of a Bowmanville home when a man tried to snatch her on Sunday afternoon. She says he covered her mouth, but she managed to kick and break free – running to her grandma’s. The suspect is described as white, 16-35 years old, and skinny. He was wearing black pants, black t-shirt, black hat and black shoes. A canvass by uniform officers produced no witnesses to the event and the investigation is continuing. Blood donation clinic running in Oshawa for Victoria’s Day

Before you head out for fireworks on Victoria Day, the Canadian Blood Services is asking you pop by their Oshawa/Whitby location and give one unit of blood. Community Development Coordinator Carolyn Palmer says they need 32 units. “It’s not much to ask for you, for people to come down and donate one unit of blood. It only takes about an hour and you’ll be back to barbecuing or spending time with family,” she says. Every minute of every day someone in the country is in need of blood. The donation clinic runs from 3 until 7 p.m. at 1300 Harmony Road North.
Victoria Day Weekend: What’s Open and Closed

With the long weekend upon us, Durham Radio News has put together a list of what’s opened and closed. The LCBO and Beer Stores will remain open on Saturday and Sunday, but will close their doors on Monday. Government offices, libraries, schools, and banks will be also stay shut. Most retailers, grocery stores, and shopping malls, including Pickering Town Cente and the Oshawa Centre will be closed. Keep in mind, there’s no garbage pick-up or mail delivery. People with blue box pick-up will have their collection date moved to Tuesday. But there is some good news for people looking for something to do … shoppers can still go to the Eaton Centre, Vaughan Mills or Square One on Victoria Day. There’s also family-fun attractions open on Monday: the Toronto Zoo, Canada’s Wonderland, and Centerville Amusement Park. GO Transit will be running on a Sunday schedule and Toronto Island Ferry will be operating on their spring/fall schedule. Durham Police warning residents of possible liquor scam

You might find yourself shopping for some beer or wine this weekend, but Durham Police are warning residents of a possible liquor scam. Officers say two people were offered cheap alcohol while shopping at the LCBO and Whitby Mall. They say in both cases, transactions never happened. But in previous similar cases, victims have been scammed out of their money when the suspect flees before the sale is finished. The suspect is described as: a white male; 5’8″-5’9″ tall: 170lbs, in his late 40′s to early 50′s, with shoulder-length greyish hair(in a ponytail at the time) he also had a tattoo on his neck. Durham Police warning public of “Mystery Shopper” scam

There have been several reports of a “Mystery Shopper” scam in the Durham Region, and officers are warning the public to be careful. The scam begins with the victim answering an ad to become a mystery shopper. They’ll eventually cash a cheque, and be asked to use money transfer to wire the large amount of funds. The victim will find out later that the cheque is counterfeit, and will have to pay back all the money. Police are encouraging people to educate and protect themselves. Oshawa councillors aren’t releasing name of e-mail leaker

Oshawa Councillors have now found out who leaked a confidential e-mail that found its way onto Facebook, but that information will not be released to the public. Last week, the city’s IT department searched through councillors’ e-mails, trying to find out who shared the message, which contained information about the termination of a city staffer. Councillor John Neal was not on the committee that voted on the issue, but says Thursday’s debate was a waste of time, and only resulted in finger pointing. He says the city needs to focus on other issues like local economy and taxes.
Strike averted at the LCBO ahead of the Victoria Day long-weekend

Alcohol will be flowing across Ontario over the long-weekend after all. The LCBO and OPSEU reached a tentative agreement just before a midnight strike deadline. A walkout in advance of the Victoria Day long-weekend would have been the first in the agency’s 87-year history. No details have been released pending ratification from both sides. LCBO spokesperson Heather McGregor says the agreement is fair to taxpayers and the 6,700 employees. Head of the union’s bargaining team, Denise Davis, says the deal meets workers’ expectations and is recommending they accept it.
OPP want you to keep safety your number priority on the roads and waterways on the long weekend

Before hitting the roads on the long weekend, the OPP is reminding you to be patient, and give yourself extra time to get to your destination. Sergeant Peter Leon says police will be out in full force, and won’t tolerate any unsafe driving. Leon says the marine unit will also be out on waterways making sure safety is the number one priority.
Durham Region Humane Society grateful after $25,000 anonymous donation

It was a donation made out of pure kindness, and the Durham Region Humane Society says it came at a crucial time. $25,000 has been anonymously donated to the shelter, and Animal Health Coordinator Ruby Richards says she’s never seen anything like it. She says a man just walked into the shelter and donated the hefty amount of money. Richards says before this donation, the shelter couldn’t afford surgeries for the animals, and this gift will help them through the month.
Durham Police are looking for the public’s help after a trailer with two snowmobiles in it is stolen in Scugog

Durham police are asking the public for help in locating the suspects responsible for stealing a trailer with two snowmobiles in it. Officers say it was taken from a residential driveway on Scugog Island last week. According to police, during the overnight hours of May 7 th and 8 th the trailer was taken from a home on head road. The trailer is described as: a 2011 silver enclosed trailer with licence plate Ontario K1090P. The first snowmobile is described as: a red 2008 Ski-Doo 600cc with Ontario licence plate 983223 and VIN # 2BPSDD8A08V000090. The second snowmobile is described as: a black 2008cc Ski-doo 800 with Ontario licence plate 979328 and VIN #2BPSBB8D98V000044.
Oshawa man faces child porn charges

Officers in Durham Region have arrested a 20-year-old, following a child porn investigation. Around 6 a.m. Thursday morning, police executed a search warrant on Beatrice Street in Oshawa and seized two computers. Raymond Wilson is facing charges, and police are looking to speak with anyone who had contact with someone under the username “Avatar Aang.”
Pickering shows off its professionals
