Deal reached between General Motors of Canada and CAW Local 222 for advanced retirement opportunities for hundreds of workers

A new deal between General Motors of Canada and the CAW in Oshawa could have significant positive employment results. Local 222 President Ron Svajlenko says the agreement provides retirement incentives for up to 350 hourly production workers and an additional 20 Skilled Trades workers. The move that would allow for laid off workers to be recalled and even bring the potential for new hiring. The deal was possible thanks to a clause in the collective bargaining agreement that allowed incentives if the Oshawa plant lost a product. That occurred when GM announced that Camaro production will move to Michigan next year.

Two Whitby teens charged for trying to sell a stolen bike online

Durham police caught some teenaged thieves red handed in Whitby. The 12 and 13 year olds were trying to sell a stolen bicycle online. Police say the expensive mountain bike was taken from the garage of Whitby home on June 1st. The owner reported it to police but also searched for it online where he found it in an ad. Officers arranged to meet the suspects and confirmed it was the stolen bike.

20 year-old man facing numerous charges after accident in Oshawa

A Clarington man is facing charges for failing to remain at the scene of an accident. Durham police say a driver and passenger fled after hitting two trees and knocking over a concrete hydro pole last Friday. The vehicle flipped over and landed on its side in the Grandview and Townline Road area and witnesses say they saw two people running away. 20 year old Dustin Smith is facings numerous charges including one for impaired driving.

Durham police homicide unit investigating suspicious death in Oshawa

The Durham police homicide unit is investigating a suspicious death in Oshawa. On Tuesday morning at 7:11am, officers were called to a residence in North Oshawa to assist with an ambulance call. A deceased man was found inside and police classified his death as suspicious. Few details about the victim are known at this time. Durham District and Catholic School Boards pass balanced budgets

The Durham District School Board is in the black after passing a balanced budget for the 2013-2014 school year. The budget, of nearly $750-million will include increasing the number of full day kindergarten classes from 169 to 237 as well as increasing the number of education assistants by 10 positions.  Trustee Carolyn Morton says they will also be hiring a new mental health leader among many other new additions. Meanwhile, the Durham Catholic District School Board is also pleased to announce they have passed a balanced budget as well, and will include expanded French immersion programs and enhancements in education technology.

Durham Police continue to search Lake Ontario for missing Clarington woman

Durham Police are still searching Lake Ontario and along the shoreline of West Beach in Bowmanville for a 48 year-old woman. The woman, who is from Clarington, was last seen swimming Monday evening. According to her husband, she left her home a little before 7 p.m. and did not  and did not return after two hours. The lake was searched for several hours last night by officers and continued at daylight Tuesday. Anyone with new information regarding this investigation is asked to contact Detective Findlay of the East Division Investigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1650

Regional Property Tax Update brochure to be delivered to Durham Region residents

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Finance Department wants to notify residents and business owners that the 2013 Regional Property Tax Update brochure will be in the mail shortly. The brochure outlines how Regional services are backed and breaks down the Regional portion of residential property tax bills. This week, the tax update will be delivered to approximately 220,000 homes and businesses in Durham Region. About 52 per cent of the tax bill is used to fund services and infrastructure provided by Durham Region which includes police, social services, roads and bridges, public transit, solid waste management, planning, economic development, health and emergency medical services and more. Residents that do not want a copy or would like to see the publication online can click here.

Blue bin collection day change for City of Oshawa and Town of Whitby for Canada Day long weekend

The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department wants to remind residents of changes to blue bin collection during the Canada Day Long Weekend. The changes will take effect between July 1st and Saturday, July 6th for the City of Oshawa and Town of Whitby. Residents that have collection scheduled for Monday, July 1st will have collection moved to the following day. The shift will continue through the week until pickup for Friday, July 5th is moved to Saturday. Dufferin Street in Toronto named the worst road in Ontario for the second straight year

A record amount of votes have been counted, and have declared Dufferin Street in Toronto as the worst road in Ontario for the second straight year. Spokesperson for CAA, Korey Kennedy, says there were over 10,000 votes cast and the growing popularity of the campaign shows that road conditions continue to be a concern for motorists. There were three other streets in Toronto also included in the top 10, with Finch Avenue West in third place, and Bayview Avenue and Lawrence Avenue East in fifth and sixth place respectively. Provincial police want drivers to be prepared for wheel separations following a rash of incidents this year

Car trouble can be inconvenient in the driveway, but is potentially life-threatening on 400 series highways. That is the message coming from the OPP, who want drivers to make sure their vehicles are prepared to prevent wheel separations. Since the beginning of the year, provincial police officers have looked into 60 incidents which involved wheel separations in light duty vehicles. Police say symptoms prior to wheel separations could range from nothing to significant noise, shaking and poor handling.

Four youths arrested for Oshawa break and enter

Durham Regional Police have arrested four male youths in connection to a residential break-in. On Saturday, officers were called to a break in on Ferndale Street in Oshawa where witnesses reported seeing the teens entering a vehicle inside a garage of a home. When officers arrived three of the four teens fled the area. All four were arrested a short time later.  Investigators determined a small quantity of money was stolen from inside the vehicle. The teens are between the ages of 14-17.

Durham Police raising money and awareness for the Special Olympics

Durham Police are once again putting their rubber on the road in support of the Special Olympics. Sergeant Nancy Van Rooy says this year’s torch run kicks off in North Durham Tuesday.  Another run is being held in South Durham on Thursday. Van Rooy says this year’s theme is the ‘flame of hope’.  Click here for more information.
