Crews are working to remove a communications tower on Rossland Road and Coronation street in Whitby after it caught on fire shortly before 11 a.m. Friday morning. The fire was quickly extinguished but the tower was badly damaged and needs to be removed and Durham Police say a crane has been called in to help. As a result, Rossland Road is closed in both directions between McQuay Blvd. and Country Lane. Durham Police say the closure will last several hours and likly affect the afternoon commute. They are asking motorists to avoid the area if possible.
