Emergency officials urging people to stay safe this halloween

Posted by news | Filed under All News Stories, Durham

It’s time for little ghosts and goblins to come out of their homes and go trick or treating, but a reminder from Durham Police, have lots of fun, but be safe this Halloween.  Sergeant Nancy Van Rooy says safety should always be the number 1 consideration, when putting on costumes.  She says, choose costumes that are bright and visible to motorists, and never have masks on children’s faces that can obstruct their view, makeup is a better choice.  Parents should know the route their children are taking, and tell them to walk with a group.  Avoid crossing the roads as much as possible and carry a cell phone in case of an emergency.  Children should remain on well-lit streets and always use sidewalks.  Remind children to never enter a stranger’s home or vehicle.  Throw out any candy that is not wrapped properly or in a torn or lose package.  Inspect all candy before your child consumes it, and through away anything homemade.  When in doubt, throw it out.  Motorists are also advised to slow down and be extra careful with little ones walking around.  For more information on Halloween food safety, click here.
