OPP encouraged to provide more mental support to officers

Posted by news | Filed under All News Stories

A report released by the ombudsman on operational stress injuries of provincial police officers is critical of how the OPP is dealing with the issue.  The report looked at officers who’re suffering from depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder due to trauma on the job and claims they’re battling a culture that tells them to just “suck it up.” Acting Superintendent Dave Quigley says they’re working hard to open doors for those who are suffering and will be going through the report’s recommendations to see what more can be done.  The report shows that since 1989, 23 active and retired OPP officers have committed suicide, two more than were killed in the line of duty.
