Posted by news | Filed under All News Stories, Crime, Durham, Roads
Durham Police have finally identified the suspect, in a kidnapping in Clarington and a 27 hour standoff in Whitby, as former Oshawa councillor Robert Lutczyk. Officials say a City of Oshawa staff member, identified by Mayor John Henry as Solicitor David Potts, was kidnapped Monday night, but managed to escape when Lutczyk was confronted by police prior to barricading himself inside a building just off Hopkins Street. Superintendent Brian Osborne says officers had to be very carefull, not knowing what kind of weapons were inside. Lutczyk finally surrendered peacefully at about 5:00 Wednesday morning. Police say it appears he was upset over some business dealings with the City of Oshawa. Lutczyk is facing numerous charges, including kidnapping and forcible confinement.
