The province hopes to better protect animals in zoos and aquariums. Community Safety Minister Madeleine Meilleur says Ontario will work with animal experts and other stakeholders to come up with standards for caring for captive animals. That includes strengthening the existing OSPCA act, and introducing new rules applying to marine animals. The move comes under mounting pressure from animal-welfare activists who allege animals at Marineland aren’t being looked after properly.
