Canada’s labour market performance stronger than expected

Posted by news | Filed under All News Stories, Business

Job creation in Canada was surprisingly strong in September. According to Stats Canada there were 52,000 jobs added to the labour force, most of them full time. Senior Economist with the Canadian Labour Congress, Angela McEwen says despite the rosy headline, the actual figures aren’t so bright. She says most of the new jobs are in the self-employed category, and those jobs tend to pay less and be less secure. The unemployment rate climbed to 7.4 percent, as more people joined the labour force. Ontario’s rate dropped a tenth of a point to 7.9 percent.
