Oshawa fires and fire calls were down in 2011

Oshawa Fire Services have released their annual report and tout a decrease in fire calls and fires in 2011. However, one area where they did see a troubling increase was in fires started by careless smoking. Fire Chief Steve Merringer also says there were six fire-related injuries and one fatality, last year. He says they determined the senior had started a fire while trying to light a cigarette. Merringer says their focus continues to be on fire prevention and stresses that working smoke alarms and a family fire escape plan can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency situation.
