Town of Ajax concerned over plans to dump more sewage into Lake Ontario

Posted by news | Filed under All News Stories, Durham

The Town of Ajax wants to take a better look at the impacts of dumping more sewage into Lake Ontario. The Duffin Creek Water Pollution Plant has applied to release more effluent into the water, from a pipe located about a kilometre from the shoreline of Ajax Rotary Park beach. Senior Policy Planner Barb Hodgins says they’re concerned that nutrients, such as phosphorus, is feeding the growth of algae. Hodgins says they’re asking that York and Durham Region’s reduce the amount of nutrients coming out, by way of more filters. They also ask the regions to extend the pipeline out three kilometres to give the effluent more time to mix with the water before coming to shore.
