Report on pedestrian fatalities calls for lower speed limits on residential streets

Posted by news | Filed under All News Stories, Politics

A new report on pedestrian fatalities in Ontario, is calling for speed limits to be reduced on residential streets.  The report, from the office of Ontario’s Chief Coroner, recommends the limit be 40 kilometres an hour, down from 50, unless otherwise posted. Officials say every year, close to 100 pedestrians are killed in Ontario and more than one third of pedestrians killed are seniors. That is despite the fact that seniors only account for about 13 percent of the population.  The report also shows that 67 percent of pedestrian fatalities happen on roads with speed limits above 50 kilometres an hour.
