Changes to Employment Insurance will have a major impact on the unemployed

A meeting was held for workers in Durham region to highlight changes to employment insurance. Organizers told the crowd that laid-off workers would be forced to take lower paying jobs, and that the appeals process will also be changing with Service Canada employees taking oversight from panels of impartial citizens. President of the Durham Region Labour Council, Jim Freeman, says workers should have some say in how the program is run. Freeman says the region has experienced a high number of layoffs in recent years and more are expected in the near future, with the closure of GM’s consolidated line in Oshawa.
