Violent crime is down in Durham Region. According to the quarterly report, presented at a recent Police Services Board meeting, violent offences were down more than 3 percent, while property crimes were down almost 4 percent. Crime rates were up in a few areas however, with 10 additional arson incidents, and shoplifting up 21 percent. Board Chair Roger Anderson says they’ll continue to watch the figures, and decide further on if action is necessary. Anderson says impaired driving calls were also up almost 9 percent last quarter and he appeals to drivers to make responsible choices. Meanwhile, emergency response times are improving in Durham, with officers responding to emergency calls in less than 12 minutes 92 percent of the time in Oshawa, and 88 percent of the time in Ajax and Pickering.
