Taxpayer watchdog says citizens shouldn’t bankroll MP’s bar bills

Posted by news | Filed under All News Stories, Durham, Politics

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on members of parliament to be more transparent with their expense claims. In the wake of changes at the Alberta legislature, CTF is recommending MPs post all receipts online, and no longer be allowed to claim alcohol. Federal Director Gregory Thomas says currently citizens have no insight into how this money is spent and last year, MPs claimed $1.3 million in hospitality expenses. Thomas says residents in the Durham riding can express their support for this change by voting for a candidate who promises to be transparent with their expenses, in the upcoming by-election. Former MP Bev Oda recently resigned, in the wake of a scandal over lavish spending of taxpayer dollars.
