Whitby rolling the dice and vying for a new OLG casino

Posted by news | Filed under All News Stories, Durham, GTA

The Town of Whitby believes the risk is worth the reward.  Council has agreed to vie for an OLG casino, and turn down a request from Ajax to take their name out of the running in return for 15 percent of the profit from the Slots at Ajax Downs.  Mayor Pat Perkins says the economic benefit is worth the risk, given the implications of a new casino.  Perkins says Ajax’s offer would likely result in annual payments of close to $750,000, whereas a casino in Whitby could mean a benefit of roughly $5-million.  Pickering has already made it known that they would not be a willing host community, giving both Ajax and Whitby a 50/50 shot.  OLG officials say they expect to make a decision sometime in 2013.
