Identity theft on the rise in Canada

Canadians are being warned that more criminals are using stolen social insurance numbers and doctored birth certificates. Officials say criminals are looking for legitimate passports, driver’s licenses, and credit cards. By using illegally obtained ID markers, criminals can sidestep anti-counterfeiting measures built into government-issued ID documents. Last year, roughly 17 thousand Canadians lost more than $13 million to identity theft.
