Nurses at Lakeridge Health Whitby given more responsiblities

Posted by news | Filed under All News Stories, Durham, Healthcare

Lakeridge Health Whitby, has become the first hospital in Ontario to give nurse practicioners more autonomy and authority within their scope of practice.  Nurses there are now authorized to admit, treat and discharge patients.  Lead Nurse Practitioner, Michelle Acorn, says nurses have always had the capacity to take on the additional responsibilities.  She says this will greatly improve patient care by freeing up more time for doctors.  Acorn says in the current economic climate, it’s important that there’s value in the level of care from all medical staff.
