Human case of West Nile Virus reported in Markham

Posted by news | Filed under All News Stories, GTA, Healthcare

York Region health officials say a Markham resident is the Region’s first “probable” human case of West Nile Virus this year.  There have been two other reported cases since 2008, transmitted through infected mosquitos, but many cases go undetected.  York’s Medical Officer of Health says West Nile activity is on the rise across the province and is urging residents to protect themselves against bug bites by using insect repellent that contains deet, wearing long sleeves, pants and socks especially around dusk and dawn and removing any standing water from around your property.  A human case was confirmed just last week, in Hamilton.
