Ajax is guarding against the Emerald Ash Borer

Posted by news | Filed under All News Stories, Durham

With the Emerald Ash Borer showing up in different parts of Durham Region, the Town of Ajax took a proactive approach to stopping the invasive insect. Supervisor of Environmental Services, Tim Field, says by protecting trees, the municipality will save money. Field says to assist homeowners on how to identify ash trees and signs and symptoms of the Emerald Ash Borer, the town is currently developing a tree care kit. The kit will be completed by the fall. The insects eat the soft tissue under the tree’s bark, preventing the tree from moving water and nutrients between its roots and leaves. The Emerald Ash Borer has killed millions of ash trees in southern Ontario and the eastern US since being discovered in 2002.
