Toronto Police Chief unveils plans to improve safety, following spate of gun violence

Toronto Police are will be beefing up their presence at next weekend’s Caribbean Carnival Parade as well as in high-risk neighbourhoods after a rash of deadly shootings in the city. Chief Bill Blair says more than 400 extra officers will be downtown during the carnival, and in the following weeks, officers will work overtime to patrol some neighbourhoods as part of a “summer safety initiative.” The announcement comes after Blair met with Mayor Rob Ford and Premier Dalton McGuinty to discuss how to prevent more gun violence. Ford asked for the meeting after a shoot-out at an east-end community party that killed two people and injured more than 20 others.
