Food bank in Durham asks for help to top up its shelves

As people attend barbeques and pool parties, let’s not forget to help those in need this summer. Elizabeth Fernandes, Coordinator with Simcoe Hall Settlement House says this is a hard time of year at the food bank. She says they see up to 1,000 clients a month, up from close to 700 during the rest of the year. That’s because kids are home in the summer, so families have to provide more food, as opposed to receiving help from the breakfast programs that run at schools throughout the year. Fernandes says they need staples, such as rice, peanut butter, juice and cookies.
