Gun and Gang Enforcement Unit fights gun violence in Durham Region

Toronto politicians and community leaders are continuing to discuss ways to combat gun violence. That is especially in the wake of several deadly incidents, including a shooting at the Eaton Centre last month, and a gun-fight at a block party in Scarborough, just this past Monday. Meanwhile, Durham Police are making their best effort to stay on top of the issue, with the help of the Gun and Gang Enforcement Unit. Detective Sergeant Gerry Moote says the unit was first launched in 2005, and investigates firearm related offences, as well as identify and dismantle crime groups. Moote says 81 guns were taken off the streets last year, including one very large seizure of weapons and the majority of the guns used in crime are either stolen, or are coming into the country illegally. They rely heavily on community support and anyone with gun or gang information should call their hotline, 1-888-579-1520 EXT 5802.
