Flaherty disappointed, but not surprised by GM’s decision to shut down the consolidated car plant in Oshawa

Posted by news | Filed under All News Stories, Business, Durham, Politics

It’s been three days since GM announced it was shutting down the consolidated car plant in Oshawa, and Finance Minister and Whitby-Oshawa MP Jim Flaherty says it’s disappointing, but he’s not surprised.  He says GM announced back in 2005, that it wouldn’t have any use for the consolidated line once the flex line was in full operation. He says things could be a lot worse, when you think about the shape the auto industry was in just a few years ago. The CAW says the closure, set to take effect in June of next year, will result in the loss of 2,000 jobs in Oshawa and thousands more across the province.
