GM plans to shut down consolidated plant in Oshawa

Posted by news | Filed under All News Stories, Business, Durham

There’s some bad news on the horizon, for GM workers in Oshawa.  CAW Local 222 President Chris Buckley says GM has given notice of plans to shut down the consolidated plant, putting close to 2,000 people out of work.  Buckley says GM is required to give 12 months notice when closing a plant, and operations will cease as of June, 2013.  Buckley says Government officials at Queens Park and in Ottawa, should have something to say about this decision since they’re still majority stakeholders in the company from the bailout.  Buckley says the overall job losses will be enormous.  He says every assembly line job in Oshawa, creates nine spin-off jobs at facilities across southern Ontario.

The base C$ CAW wage is about $35 compared to US$27 for normal UAW workers — and GM can hire a percentage of workers with wages about US$16 and reduced benefits there….

The CAW has to be realistic with their compensation expectations too and not try to run and hide under the government apron whenever it is convenient. Would you rather have 2000 jobs at C$27 per hour or none at C$35?

Unfortunatley money does not grow on trees and if the Government had not bailed out GM in the first place they wouldn’t be here and right now. Ontario cannot compete with USA. If you visit USA you will find people so desperate for jobs that they will work for a lot less than us in Canada. Look what happened with Caterpillar people need to realize there is a world crisis right now!
