Back-to-work legislation introduced in Ottawa, against striking CP Rail workers

Back-to-work Legislation has been introduced in Ottawa, as the Federal Government looks to put an end to a strike by close to 4,800 CP Rail workers. Labour Minister Lisa Raitt says the Government must act now to end the strike, in order to preserve Canada’s international reputation. She says a prolonged strike could wind up costing the Canadian economy close to half a billion dollars a week. This is the third time this year that the Conservatives have intervened in a labour dispute. Opposition critics say the Government’s heavy-handed use of back-to-work Legislation is undermining the right to collective bargaining and will hurt the wages of all workers, unionized or not.
