Ontario’s fruit farmers may be in for a devastating season

Posted by news | Filed under All News Stories, Durham, Politics

The Ontario government is keeping a close watch on the province’s fruit crops. Durham MPP John O’Toole says as much as 80 percent of the apple crop may have been lost following this spring’s early blossom and cold snap, as well as 30 percent of the tender fruit industry. O’Toole says it’s not just farmers that could be impacted. O’Toole says the availability, quality and price of fruit at local markets may be affected too. O’Toole says there are several government programs in place to help farmers in this situation, which act very much like insurance.
