Election fears dashed as Liberal budget passes with ease

The minority Liberal budget has passed with room to spare. The final vote was 52-37. In the lead up to today’s decision, Premier Dalton McGuinty was facing the real possibility of another election had the budget been turned down, however, a deal struck with NDP leader Andrea Horwath yesterday saw that possibility all but disappear. Mcguinty has agreed to add a 2 percent surtax to all residents earning more than $500,000 a year, but will eliminate that tax once the books are balanced in 2017.
