Durham District School Board tackles mental health issues during a daylong symposium

Mental health issues can affect as many as 1 in 5 Canadian youths, which is why the Durham District School Board held a full day seminar Wednesday, sending a message of acceptance, and education. From simple anxiety to depression, proper clinical diagnosis is critical to recovery, but keynote speaker Shawn Campbell says having a support network is also very important. He says that can include anyone from a counselor, to clinicians, family members or friends at school. During the seminar kids learned that many young people know something is wrong, but are afraid to seek help because of the stigma. About 80 percent of mental illnesses in youth go untreated.
